Why does it seem like a lot of Americans are angry about politics and stuff – just for the sake of being mad?

I had dinner with my old football coach from high school along with his wife and some of his friends.

These people are mostly in their 60′s, and mostly working-class, and it’s a fairly rural area here in Texas.

And man, some of them were MAD about politics! Everyone from Obama to Texas governor Rick Perry to Nancy Pelosi to Texas senators Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn, among others.

I don’t mean they were just being cynical or joking – some of them seemed genuinely mad on a personal level with the political situation in the US.

Why? Why would you let something as silly as politics affect your emotions in that way? It can’t possibly be healthy. It probably raises your blood pressure and worsens your stress hormone levels.

I never get mad about politics. What’s the point? I just do my thing, work for my dad’s firm, make some bank, hit up the nightclubs with the ladies and drink the good stuff on bottle service.

That’s what other people should do, too. They should relax and just not worry about politics. Now, to be fair, I do always vote in every election, and I try to pick the dude who will cut the most taxes.

Why can’t Americans see the wisdom of this path? Why would they get mad about stuff that is so abstract to begin with? I mean, come on – politics in general is mostly irrelevant. It’s just a more boring version of football, with two sides, except that it never ends.

  1. I didn’t even bother to read that, but there’s a lot to be mad about, our government isn’t perfect.

  2. whats the point they are all liars anyway

  3. American politics is a lot like professional wrestling.

Your guy winning and the other guy losing and getting laughed at is all that matters, even if it’s all completely fake and the same person owns both teams.

  4. because the government is digging deeper and deeper into our civil rights and slowly but surely screwing us over. I heard they were passing a bill to out law spoons and rocks becasue they can kill people. . (sarcasm) but you get what im saying.

  5. politics effect every 1s life even if ur not into it or pay attention to it of course some people will be upset at how it effects them

  6. Where you’re ALLOWED to work, how much of your earnings you’re ALLOWED to keep, what you’re ALLOWED to do for entertainment etc is ALL fought-over in the political arena.
You may not be interested in politics, but rest assured politics IS interested in YOU.

  7. I will tell you the bottom line. I have thought about this. There is no other rational explanation. It is about race. It is city vs rural, it is north vs south, it is what the definition of a real American is, it means in short that many older Americans can not fathom the new world we are headed to and its progressive past. They are afraid of the differences and they see what they think is a moral decline which is really a dose of realism that they have been shaded from their whole lives.
Now that is the real answer. Whether the right wing likes to hear that or not. It is not their white, heterosexual, rural America anymore, for America is now much more complex than that and they can not bring themselves to understand it so they just vent their fear by hate, spite and negative statements blanketly calling America bad or THE NEW AMERICA bad!
    Actually, it is quite pathetic.

  8. I plan to use my shinny new Obamacare to get disability based on stress disorder and depression brought on by obama.
    TOUCHEEEEEEEEEEE

  9. These people see the day to day theft of their rights and property. You are clueless and ignore the fact that you too will be affected one day. Wake up. It is not irrelevant unless you don’t care or can’t be bothered to control your own destiny. Making fun of those that are proactive just makes you look foolish. Not them.

  10. Look what’s going on around you. People need to get fired up! Elections have real consequences in our daily lives. More now than ever since our government has grown into a MONSTER and is involved in every aspect of our lives!

  11. We are not just because.
We are mad because what happens with the government. Affects us in more ways than you can even think of . your to young to understand it. Give it time and you will be pissed about what they are doing because THEN it will affect YOU in a personal way. When you see the CRAP that goes on in the Government that come’s out of YOUR POCKET when your trying just to keep food on the table.
Come on 4 MILLION DOLLARS to see the matting habits of the tree frog. BITE ME yes I get mad.
You will as soon as you understand it.

  12. lol, the funny party

“Americans are passive over politics, they don’t care about anything, Americans don’t riot, whats wrong with you Americans?”

“Why are Americans mad or upset over politics? Politics is a non issue, don’t get rild up. . . . . ????”

    Can’t please everyone I guess.

  13. It is not abstract at all. It effects each and every one of us. It will also effect your coaches and I am guessing parents even more with the cuts Obama wants to make to Medicare. I am only 48 and I take my politics very seriously I watch each election, I pay close attention to what each candidate has to say.

Son what these politicians do now may very well affect you down the road. Take for example Obama health care plan 10 year 1 trillion dollars, 2 things come to mind first he will be long gone out of office and he will never be affected by any policy he implements neither will any member of congress you can bet you sweet tail on that

2nd When has any government program ever cost what it said? you know just know that if this this boondoggle passes as it stands 1 trillion more than likely means 1. 7 or 2 trillion dollars I think even the folks that are in favor of his plan would have to agree with that.

Things done now will affect your children the mistakes that Bush made ( yes he made some) and I am a republican and compounded by Obama is adding debt to your grandchildren. Nothing is irrelevant. In fact it may very well be the most important decisions we make in the next few years

That is why people are so up in arms, especially working class folks, they see a life time of work going down the drain.

  14. Its because if the policies of this administration go through, this country is changed forever and not in ways that the older set finds acceptable. This is far more serious than mere politics.

I’m afraid the younger set thinks this is something new. It isn’t. My generation has fought against these plans all our lives. Just for the record, until recently I was a Democrat for 40 years. This has nothing to do with race but with freedom of the individual which the progressive policies will continue to limit. This country was never meant to be Europe. People came here to get away from Europe.

  15. Perhaps you have never heard from a war veteran before, someone who could have been killed but luckily survived. The war in Vietnam was ruled by politics. As a twenty year old cobra gunner my life was on the line at every moment. I am an Army Veteran and I did survive. I did not think the war was just. It was a war. If you give your oath that it what matters. I do know just about all the answers about everything, or I can find them.
