DREAM Act lobbyists are spotlighting heart-wrenching stories of high-achieving teens brought to this country when they were toddlers. But instead of arguing for case-by-case dispensations, the protesters want blanket pardons. The broadly-drafted Senate bill would confer benefits on applicants up to age 35 and the House bill contains no age
ceiling at all. The academic achievement requirements are minimal. Moreover, illegal aliens who didn’t arrive in the country until they turned 15 – after they laid down significant roots in their home country – would be eligible for DREAM Act benefits and eventual U.S. citizenship. And like past amnesty packages, the Democrat plan is devoid of any concrete eligibility and enforcement mechanisms to deter already-rampant immigration benefit fraud.
The DREAM Act sponsors have long fought to sabotage a clearly worded provision in the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA) that states:
“Notwithstanding any other provision of law, an alien who is not lawfully present in the United States shall not be eligible on the basis of residence within a State (or a political subdivision) for any postsecondary education benefit unless a citizen or national of the United States is eligible for such a benefit (in no less an amount, duration, and scope) without regard to whether the citizen or national is such a resident.” Ten states defied that federal law and offered DREAM Act-style tuition preference to illegal aliens: California, Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Washington. The last time the DREAM Act champions tried to tack their scheme onto a larger
immigration proposal, they snuck in language that would absolve those ten states of their law-breaking by repealing the 1996 law retroactively–and also offering the special path to green cards and citizenship for illegal alien students.
Despite the obvious electoral advantage this plan would give Democrats, several pro-illegal alien amnesty Republicans crossed the aisle to support the DREAM Act, including double-talking Sens. John McCain, Richard Lugar, Bob Bennett, Sam Brownback, Norm Coleman, Susan Collins, Larry Craig, Chuck Hagel, Kay Bailey Hutchison, Mel Martinez,
Olympia Snowe, and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee (who champions even greater illegal alien student benefits than those proposed by Democrats). After paying lip service to securing the borders, McCain promised DREAM Act demonstrators this week that he supported the bill and would work to “resolve their issues.”

you lie -thast obama for black
It’s for those who came to US when they were 15 year old and graduated from US high school 16 years ago.
the DREAM act has been around for a decade being reintroduced this being the third time, but has not been passed. the students back then were college age, and now are adults, and are still waiting for their chance to be full americans. you also must consider that legislation takes time, and people do not stay the same age.
that is why the dream act has an age ceiling of 35,
I just laughed.
The dream act has age limits. The applier has to be below 35 years of age and must have arrived in US prior to turning 16. Also the person has to graduate from US High school and have a crystal clear criminal record. The bill does NOT make them eligible for pell grants. Upon applying they will be given a 6 year conditional residency, during which they have to complete at least 2 years of college or 2 years of military service. After 5.5 years upon meeting the requirements then can file for removal of conditions and receive pernament residency.
Bottom line: You sir are wrong as hell.
The dream act repeals the section of 1996 law which will return the state’s ambiguity of whom to give aid to. If a state chose to give aid to asian immigrants and not people from alabama. It will be able to.
Fraud is unlikely, you will need school records to prove you lived in us, as well as college or military records. It is not 1986 when everything was on paper.
It wont pass, its just a political stunt to get the latino vote, they did it in 2008 and they are doing it now.
