  1. The Donkey— Presidential candidate Andrew Jackson was the first Democrat ever to be associated with the donkey symbol. His opponents during the election of 1828 tried to label him a “jackass” for his populist beliefs and slogan, “Let the people rule. ” Jackson was entertained by the notion and ended up using it to his advantage on his campaign posters.

But cartoonist Thomas Nast is credited with making the donkey the recognized symbol of the Democratic Party. It first appeared in a cartoon in Harper’s Weekly in 1870, and was supposed to represent an anti-Civil War faction. But the public was immediately taken by it and by 1880 it had already become the unofficial symbol of the party.

The Elephant— Political cartoonist Thomas Nast was also responsible for the Republican Party elephant. In a cartoon that appeared in Harper’s Weekly in 1874, Nast drew a donkey clothed in lion’s skin, scaring away all the animals at the zoo. One of those animals, the elephant, was labeled “The Republican Vote. ” That’s all it took for the elephant to become associated with the Republican Party.

See the official sites of the Republican National Committee and the Democratic National Committee for more information.

  2. The donkey is a jackass who is known to run about aimlessly and be stubborn. That is why Dems have the donkey as their symbol.

The elephant is a grand animal (biggest in the animal kingdom) who moves slowly, thereby recognizing that change for the sake of change alone is foolish. Instead the elephant takes its time so as not to be precipitous. That is why Republicans have the elephant as a symbol.

  3. I found the same info. as Alex, thus there& #039; s nothing, which I can add

  4. Andrew Jackson was called a Jackass by his opponents and he turned it around and used the donkey, a strong willed determined animal in his campaign. It was then used by cartoonists to represent the party.

The elephant was also a cartoon appearing with other animals first in a Harper’s Weekly cartoon to stand for the Republican Vote. It caught on.

  5. The donkey is a donkey and the elephant is fat and drinks up that whole water and eats the whole food, which it so, because it is more courageous and does water hole functions strongly, finds. Elephant also forgotten never history, is also the part of the reason, why they are better more intelligently and at finding and at the defense of their Wasserlöcher. Again a donkey is a donkey, the à ¼ ber credit not genà ¼ genden water if it doesn& #039 weights; t-really necessity the much and works never with difficulty to a water hole somehow finds.
