Is the Republican Party in danger of becoming a southern regional party instead of a national party?

The only states that voted more Republican this time around are the deep southern states. You had white southerners voting 9 to 1 McCain over Obama.

Do you guys really want to be known as the angry white southern party?

You might have a little bit of support all over the nation, but that’s your base right there.

kick em to the curb.

It’s clear from every electoral map I’ve seen. The only big city McCain won was Phoenix. And most of the states he won are the "empty states" like the Dakotas.

And population is generally shifting towards cities. A bad sign for Republicans.

My guess is that the party is going to take the next four years to reinvent and redefine itself. It will re-emerge as more conciliatory, less arrogant, more pragmatic, less idealistic, more broad-based, less extreme. They can’t make it with just Southern white men.

The -new- Republican Party might be a return to the values today called ‘paleo-conservatism’, the reputable and respectable values of Barry Goldwater, and if the -old- John McCain. But McCain, Palin, et al, will be considered -old- Republicans and will not be featured highly in the new party. Maybe Jindal. Maybe Pawlenty.

Actually, the republican party is in danger of losing the southern block and being a party with scattered strongholds in the deep south, plains, and parts of the old west, plus a few other places here and there.

As for the South, Obama registered so many minorities that they are finally in proportion with their population, for the first time in history, in states like Georgia. Places like Virginia and North Carolina went democrat and many southern states, including South Carolina, were closer to blue than they’ve been since the end of the dixiecrat era.

The liberal population centers in these conservative bases are growing faster as they have higher birth rates and rates of immigration from more liberal states. This trend has been leaving the south less conservative in the last few years and there is reason to think it will be pretty toughly fought and divided four years from now, with a lot of liberals and a lot of conservatives and few in the middle.

There’s a power vacuum in the republican party right now and the governors are fighting to fill it, as the senators and congressmen have taken such a hit. The fight seems to be between Palin and the social conservatives and Romney and the fiscal conservatives, with the lesser known Pawlenty and Jindall emerging, but not well known, to try to posture for position. It wouldn’t surprise me to see someone from the past, possibly even Newt Gingrich, whose days running for office are clearly over, emerge as the new RNC chair and try to rebuild a consensus and a party. Personally, I hope they crash and burn, but that has rarely happened to a major political party and there are plenty of people out there who don’t agree with the democrats. They just don’t agree with each other either.

No, there are conservatives all over the US – people don’t realize (or don’t want to realize maybe?) that in California… get outside the urban sprawls of SF, LA, San Diego, and Santa Barbara, and you’ve got TONS of conservatives.

When I lived in SoCal, I’d drive out to Riverside County (the 909 as we call it), and I’d be cruising down the freeway in my S2000 surrounded by lifted pickups with American flags all over them; W stickers (this was around ’04); anti-welfare stickers; etc.

My neighbors back home in Massachusetts are right-wing, churchgoing conservatives who were nice, but would stare inapropriately when I came back to visit with my Asian girlfriend.

So, they’re everywhere, but I think that increasingly, their primary voter base is centered in the South. There are a lot of parts of the south that would rather commit suicide than vote democrat.

Hoyoke has it about correct; the split is not regional but more broken across metropolotin and subirbs and rural. The South and western states )not west coast) went Republican and the northeast and west coast Democratic and this has been a pattern with minor changes for a while. President Elect Obama got the black vote both percent and increased registration and the youth vote bthat made some states switch but for the most part you look at the cities in California and New York nd they voted very strongly for the President Elect but the smaller towns/cities and rural areas voted for Sen McCain. In Tennessee President Elect Obama took Memphis, parts of Nashville and a small section of Knoxville but the est of the state went with Sen McCain. The portions of Knox County that had President Elect Obama win were the primarily black districts and the college campus areas with the rest of the county and city went the other way. One electiuon does not indicate anything for the future so saying the Republicans are a regional party is not as definite as you would like to believe; President Elect Obama ran a very good campaign against President Bush and did not even talk about Sen McCain that often but it was a politically savvy thing to do. The percent of white voters in the South voting for Sen McCain was not the 9 tp 1 you want to point out and infer that it means a racist vote-the only group voting that ration 90% for one candidate was the black vote. It split closer to 65 to 35 in Tennessee and the rest of the South though white males did go higher for McCain at about 70% to 75%. A ergional party does not get 46% of the national vote. The facts are that President Elect Obama owes his victory on campaigning against some one not running and playing a guilt by association game-something he says is not true based on his defense of friends and acquantinces by saying he didn;t know what they were/said or that it was them that said that not me and I should not be judged based on that. The split is where the split always has been and growing steadily worse-urban against the rest of the country.

Did you know that there was a time that opposite was true. The South almost always supported Democrats and the rest of the country supported the Republicans.

Right now, its urban vs rural with the mid-size suburban areas slightly split one way or the other. And the mid-west is mostly Republican right now too.

James, your statement that the only states that had republican majorities were in "the deep south" is false. Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Arizona, Alaska, Texas, North & South Dakota and several others are not "the deep south" or even "south." Do you even know what the deep south is?

I suspect that your factoid of white southerners voting 9 to 1 in favor of McCain isn’t correct either, but I honestly don’t know.

Blacks voted approximately 19 to 1 in favor of Obama. Do they want to be known as "the angry black party?" Where is your concern about their voting patterns? Which group is more "racist?"

    References :

  41. Isabella Said,

Well, if the Republicans had four percent versus 96 percent, maybe. But Republicans were the choice of 47 percent of Americans, so it is nearly half. Obama got a lot of support from students, younger people that voted for the first time in their lives (and maybe not that educated politically), and if you look at the electoral map by county, it is mostly red with a few patches of blue. Obama was quite successful because he only concentrated on getting the states with more electoral votes by registering a lot of new young voters. But over the next four years those new voters will see him in action and have time to think, so I think that the Democratic party is the one that will be extinct in 2012.
