Hmmm, well the shift came in the 1920s with Warren G Harding then Calvin Coolidge then the Great Depression. The 1900 Election, the Democrats were the Religious Right with William Jennings Bryan. The biggest shift to the big tent came with Franklin Delano Roosevelt, which was pretty easy with Republicans linking themselves with fat cats throughout the 1920s, and with their laissez-faire policies paving the way to the Great Depression.
So it has remained since with the racists in the southern states departing the Democratic Party for the Republican Camp after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Bible belt politically activating itself at the time of Ronald Reagan.

The democratic party has become the party of special interest groups because the democrats point out the inequalities that may be present among minorities and women which separates them from white men. Its really getting old and irrelevant and for white men in the workforce or pursuing education, that advantage became irrelevant with affirmative action and women’s rights. The Democratic Party appeals to this group in our society because they promise generous monetary gifts that are to be paid for by the public treasury.
