  1. Once LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act, racists like Thurmond and Helms switched to the Republican Party.

  2. The Southern Democrats didn’t like Black people having any power.

    And Goldwater pandered to that vote in 1964 as Southern Democrats became republican. Then the “Liberal” Republicans became democrats.

  3. I’m not sure what you view this ‘reversal’ is.

    The Democrat and Republican party’s essentially became the party between around the 1880′s all the way to the FDR. At that point the left-right divide that has been present in American politics ever since was created.

    From there both party’s have continued the trend in America of slow but constant movement to the left.
