In the late 19 century the ideologies of the Republican and Democratic parties switched. Grover Cleveland betrayed his party? Previously The Republican Party represented a more liberal stance on social issues.e.g. Abraham Lincoln. How did this happen? Can you offer some citations?
The conservative vs liberal, anti-federalist vs. federalists, states rights vs. federal power. These ideas of what the size, scope and power of the federal government should be have existed since the foundation of America. The founders had very different ideas concerning such issues, however, they were able to lay their differences aside, compromise and give birth to our great nation. We greatly need this spirit of compromise and cooperation to return in America.
As for political parties. Over time their ideologies fluctuate depending on who their leaders are, national events and issue…….i.e…the Republican party slowly become a conservative party throughout the first half of the 20th century where it sided with big business and big banks while the Democratic party trended toward the liberal ideas of fair labor and mandating corporate regulation. The Democratic southern conservatives completed the shift following the civil rights movement of the 1960’s becoming Republicans, while those involved with the social revolution and anti-war efforts of the 60’s gravitated toward the more liberal leadership that had taken hold in the Democratic party.

This is so they could both give the voters hope for change, which really means more of the same old crap.

Democrats and Republicans have more or less always been the party of the poor and rich respectively but many poor racists decided hatred of blacks and traditional Bible values was more important than improving their economic status, so when the emergence of the Civil Rights Movement and the anti-war 60s counter culture came they decided to switch sides to a welcoming Republican party.

The switching to ideologies has been a practice of both parties through both the 19th and 20th Centuries. One prime example is Conservation of resources and Health were started by Republican Administrations of TR and Taft. Republicans still believe and foster programs of reforestation and soil replishment, but the Democrats have taken beyond that and to an extreme to show the voters that they more concerned about it than Republicans. Republicans passed the Conservation Act and Pure Food and Drug Act. There are examples of both parties trying to get electorate to vote for them by going to an extreme with ideologoes of the other political party. Prime example is the falsify data on the global warming. Just look at the Palar bear herd which at a all time high this year. A doctor who is good friend of mine has studied the Polar bear herd for last 25 yrs has laugh at people reporting that Polar bear herd is declining.
